brain antioxidantsIf we want that our brain to function properly we need a good supply of essential fatty acids. Our body can not produce all these fatty acids, so we need to get them through food sources or supplements. The scientists consider that these fats help to supply oxygen to our brain cells and help protect the brain cell membranes in order to prevent illnesses like dementia and Alzheimer, not to mention the weight loss impact.

They advise us to increase our intake of these fatty acids, usually called omega-3 fatty acids, that can be found in fish oils, olive oils, nuts and seeds. A good example of what fish oils can do may be found in the Japanese’s diet. They have a diet rich in fish and this gives a guessing account for their longest life expectancies in the world.

Research has shown that more than 20% of the population of the Universe, over the age of 85, suffers from some kind of dementia.  Other cultures reveal that life styles can improve the level of mental function beyond the age of 85. For a better mental health in our later years, the following can be done for the improvement:

* Have the habit of doing crossword puzzles and other mental games. Research proved that one’s involvement with cognitive activities will help prevent memory loss. While crossword puzzles may help with memory functions, mental exercises with a friend are much more rewarding and beneficial.

* Our diet is also very important, in helping to limit brain aging. Nutritionists insist these facts. They tell us about what antioxidants are and how they work and also in what food sources they can be found in. Wild salmon is one of the best and strongest sources for omega-3 fish oil. By adding wild salmon to your diet 1-2 times a week or by taking a mercury-free supplement would benefit your over all brain health.

* Nuts are also a great source for omega-3 and omega-6. Nuts contain super strong antioxidants and anti-inflammatory property that also help to reduce the risk of heart disease, which is the leading killer of both men and women in the world. Adding about ¼ cup of nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, peanuts, pecans, or pistachio nuts) to your diet around 2-4 times a week will improve your over all health.

* The number 1 super food in the list of 10 Super foods is a little know berry found in the rainforest of Brazil called acai berry. This contains a powerful antioxidant. Not only does it have the acai berry juice in it but also many other strong antioxidants like mangosteen fruit juice and the famous goji berry juice along with over 100 other nutritional ingredients.
